Summary

Allan Webb
Cloud Architect | IT Professional |  Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Due Diligence and Integration | AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional
IT professional with a breadth of experience applying both consultative vision and technical IT solutions to a wide array of business cases, technology stacks, and industries: mergers and acquisitions due diligence and integration (M&A), health care, web services platform cloud migrations, high performance computing (HPC), machine learning (ML), and internet of things (IoT).

Over the years, I've been responsible for the setup and support of IT infrastructure and services for all Qualcomm offices outside of San Diego, both domestic and international. Between 1997 and 2011, I spent approximately 30% of my time working on the ground in 30+ countries, deploying infrastructure and ensuring that our new offices, expansions, and acquisitions integrated successfully into Qualcomm's global operations.

In addition, my team provided support for Qualcomm's presence at numerous trade show and investor events around the world, including CTIA, CES, 3GSM, Mobile World Congress (MWC), ITU, 3GPP standards meetings, and our New York and London investor relations meetings.

Responsibilities have also included many M&A due diligence and integration projects as the IT representative on due diligence teams for Qualcomm acquisitions totaling several billion dollars.

I helped launch early stage projects being incubated in our Qualcomm Labs incubator, including products which were eventually spun off into their own entities: 2Net (which became part of QualcommLife) and Gimbal (which spun off).

The Gimbal project also provided the impetus for becoming conversant with Amazon Web Services, and a subsequent move into the Qualcomm Cloud Team, where I have been involved in a number of platform migrations to AWS as well as cloud governance and cloud architecture work.

Questions & Answers

Why did you choose your profession?

I've always been interested in understanding the big picture as well as the technical details.

A career in IT provided the ability to work both in the context of the technology details as well as to apply that knowledge to the big picture business problems.

Being a generalist who came from the infrastructure side of things ultimately created my entry into DevOps, cloud automation, and cloud strategy, as well as the M&A world.

Who are your main influences?
Technology business visionaries like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos. In the same category, but on a more personal level for me, Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi.
Describe your greatest accomplishment.

I consider the totality of my career at Qualcomm, a company which enabled a fundamental shift in how the world communicates, to be my greatest accomplishment.

I always felt like the work I was doing at Qualcomm was contributing in a significant way, especially during our major expansion period as we went from a company with ~3,000 employees when I started to over ~33,000.

What tools do you use?
Way too many to list without missing a bunch, but here are the tools I interact with pretty much daily: MacOS, Linux, a bunch of AWS products, GitHub, and TextMate.
What are your long-term goals?
Continue to help organizations achieve their business goals through the application of appropriate IT and Cloud strategy and solutions.

What is DevOps?

Wikipedia defines DevOps thusly:

"DevOps is a software engineering culture and practice that aims at unifying software development and software operation. The main characteristic of the DevOps movement is to strongly advocate automation and monitoring at all steps of software construction, from integration, testing, releasing to deployment and infrastructure management."

While the definition above is accurate, it focuses solely on the technical, process, and tooling aspects of DevOps, but...
